The role

The solicitors (or, depending on the individual, barristers) will be part of the legal team, working closely with more the team leaders and legal assistants.

The team of solicitors and legal assistants will initially report to the Quality Manager (who will be working closely with the Director and Operations Manager), however as the team grows, the aim is that the team leaders will increasingly manage small teams of solicitors as direct reports, who in turn will manage the legal assistants.

Key responsibilities

•Conducting document review and, if appropriate, other fee-earning work (there will be target average daily chargeable hours)
•Conducting issues-based research using document review software
•Supervising legal assistants in relation to individual matters or generally as directed by the team leaders or Quality Manager
•Dealing with complex issues on individual matters that are escalated by the legal assistants
•Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant areas of law to the Belfast office's practice
•Ensuring compliance with financial disciplines on matters (e.g. daily time-recording)

Qualifications, skills and competencies

TECHNICAL
Essential
•Qualified solicitor or barrister in England and Wales or Northern Ireland, but Republic of Ireland or other common law jurisdictions will be considered. If not qualified in England & Wales then willing to complete process to requalify as such
•Post-qualification experience of commercial litigation or other contentious work, ideally for at least a year
•High level of attention to detail, but can also step back from the detail and see problems, opportunities and trends
•Strong analytical ability: evaluates information to identify underlying key issues and broader implications
•Aptitude for learning (and becoming proficient in) the use of software and IT applications, and using search terms intelligently to navigate large databases/document management systems
Desirable
•Knowledge and experience of large scale document reviews with the ability to project manage the process from instruction to completion
•Fluency in a second language with an ability to translate legal documents into English. Western European languages an advantage, but other languages (e.g. Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Korean or Russian) especially desirable.
